I don't know if it's obvious from this pic', but if you look underneath the Landrover a couple of fork points have been fitted I assume so it can be loaded onto a curtain sider. Cool eh?
My guess would've been to keep the frame from bending in off-roading.
Sounds dumb but when ignorant, we rely on these little snippets of our pasts...Some dude I went to school with said his uncle wrecked his car but was handy, so he repaired it, spent days and days and lots of money. When it was fixed, he tried to drive it down the road but it was unmanoeuvrable (I may have made up a word there) because the frame had been warped. Hence, the dumb guess; which I'll freely admit to because everyone already knows I'm screwy :)
